ABOUT US

ROXANN

Roxie has been a nurse midwife for over 26 years. She started working as a labor and delivery nurse in a community setting for 15 years and after completing the midwifery program at University of Medicine and Dentistry in Newark, she introduced Nurse Midwifery to Hackettstown Hospital. Roxie has been educating nurses, midwives and clients for years about how pregnancy and birth are normal events and respecting the woman’s ability to grow, deliver and nurture her own baby. She believes that providing women with information, guidance and support will enable them to make the best choices for their baby’s birth.

Roxie has been married to Paul for over 35 years and has one daughter, Marley, who is also a nurse midwife catching babies on the West Coast. It’s not a surprise that Marley would be interested in birth since she has been attending deliveries with her mom since she was a little girl.

Roxie is often seen quietly knitting in the corner of a labor room paying close attention to her laboring mother. She brings with her a sense of confidence and calm that empowers women to continue in the amazing work that their bodies were designed to do. She knows that a supportive presence allows women to labor without fear and to progress through labor more efficiently. She believes that the location a woman chooses has much to do with the success of her labor and delivery experience. Conversations are initiated during prenatal care to help discover a woman’s desire for birth, as well as her fears about labor. She provides education, support and encouragement during all of her appointments so that each woman can look forward to the birth experience that they are envisioning.

CINDY

Cindy’s career as a nurse midwife began at a community hospital as a nursing assistant. She worked with some amazing nurses who had a great respect for quality patient care and who influenced her decision to become a labor and delivery nurse. When Roxie returned to Hackettstown Hospital as a nurse midwife, Cindy was able to witness a midwife birth for the first time and realized it was the type of care every woman should expect and deserve. After graduating from University of Medicine and Dentistry midwifery program in 1998, Cindy and Roxie began working together initially at Hackettstown Hospital and currently at Morristown Medical Center, “Our Birthing Center” in Morristown, as well as home births.

Cindy has been married to Russell for almost 35 years. He is a wonderful “midwife husband” who understands when she can’t always attend family events or get the cupcakes made for birthday celebrations. He has filled in the blanks as their three children grew into adults and now with 8 grand children he continues to carry on. Midwifery is certainly a family affair.

Cindy had the honor of attending her daughters’ births. Her oldest, Katie, had her water babies in a birthing center in Pennsylvania while Colleen, her youngest, had births in both Morristown Hospital and at home. It was wonderful to catch her grandchildren, but what was more amazing was witnessing the strength and fearlessness her daughters embraced during their labors. Make no mistake, a midwife’s daughter doesn’t get a free ride in labor, they work just as long and hard as other women. Katie said after her first delivery that she never felt so loved as she did during her labor and birth. All women should feel that way. Cindy believes it is the trusting, supportive relationships that are established that empower women to be confident and embrace all that they are capable of during such an amazing experience.
